Emotional abuse has been what I suffered the most and it's taken me a long time through my healing to accept that it had such a crippling and traumatic effect on me. I could understand that being physically bashed and hit all the time and being sexually abused would have such devastating effects on a baby and child, but now I appreciate that it's the emotional and psychological side of it is that does the real damage even in physical abuse. It's all on the feeling and emotional level where the pain and suffering is. And one can be far more traumatised and retarded psychologically due to the emotional abuse than just being physically hit. The body can repair itself, but it's not until you've accepted, expressed and uncovered the whole truth of your emotions and feelings that the deeper soul level pain will be removed.
This is article covers a lot of the what is considered emotional abuse.
"Verbal Abuse: Examples of verbal abuse include belittling the child by calling him/her names like "stupid", "worthless", "a mistake" and more. This also includes blaming the child constantly for things that may not even be their fault, and threatening the child with physical pain."
